TRYONX TURTLES PROJECT |
|
The intent of this project was to explore the possibilities of translating fossil material into wall art. These turtle fossils were an appropriate starting point in that due to geological compression, they are as flat as pancakes yet they retain all of their rich textures and detail. The concept was to remove all of what had originally been rock matrix. Doing so would then release the visually intriguing silhouette of the fossil. I felt that this aspect would be further enhanced by mounting the finished piece using “standoffs” so that it stood several inches in front of a wall, possibly employing the use of “back lighting”. The strategy was to begin with the small turtle as a trial. The trial run was intended to test both the technical feasibility of creating these pieces as well as having something with which to gauge the market as well. As can be seen from the results displayed upon the following pages, I was successful at completing my end of the project. Unfortunately, the individual who had committed to marketing the program turned out to be full of nothing other than “hot air”. Should someone with the necessary resources and connections take an interest in resurrecting this project, I would be more than willing to pick up where I had left off.
